Hello! Team member from Team Dead Deer here ringing in the new years with you gals and/or guys of U18!

Avarice is set in the world of the webcomic Price For Freedom by ArbuzBudesh. Set in the same region Avarice will share locations but primarily will be set in the neighboring Kaldea several decades in the past. But this will be a great place to learn quite a bit more on the lore of comic!

A top down RPG inspired by classic games such as Baldurs Gate, we will have quite a lot in the way of writing, quests, choices, and a deep overacting narrative which will kick off in the second chapter.

The game will feature three planned companions that you will be able to build relationships with and instead of fading to black like in DA/ME/BD and others we will get... Lewd. Current planned companions are;

Samara: An energetic, plucky island Elf with a past marked with scraping by and eking out a living with hear spear. She's in a tight spot and could use an accomplice, and a friend.

Hiho: A traveling Naga priestess devoted to the Lizard Folk religion of Halmech. Timid, a tad shy hides an exceptionally brilliant and indomitable will. She lacks the initiative and decisiveness which you can bring for her.

Osh'To: A massive scarred Ogre woman with a calm and relaxed demeanor. She is light hearted, kind in nature. Once an experienced and hardened mercenary, she looks to you for adventure and distraction from her past.

If multiple romantic dalliances with these ladies doesn't seem enough fear not! A myriad of dalliances and trysts, one night stands, with Humans, Elves, Ogrish, Lizard Folk, and possibly depending on interest BeastFolk in the future! Some of these will be quest bound or simply based on a long standing built relationship with the character. Others can be bought with the simple flip of the coin.

Whew been a tad busy lately, myself facing a short bought of writers block on one dialogue but in general its been an extremely productive bit of time between the last time I posted here. We've pushed out our first Patron build and this brought with it the new and highest voted Companion, Hiho.

She brings her companion quest of course, which is virtually complete we were a bit behind on art assets but it was a planned lag and once art assets are done we can simply socket in the art assets and presto it will be completed. She also brings her lewd scene as well for those of you into lewd games... Comes complete with degenerate hand holding.


Along with Hiho's quest and assets we have a great deal of new sprites added to liven up the town which all have yet to be animated (all sprites in the game WILL be animated btw) but is a decent example of what we plan locations to look like population wise. We've also begun the framework for the relationship and impact system where what you do will change the companions interactions with you as well as supporting characters etc. Your decisions will have an affect on how the people of this world see you.

The main narrative isn't being introduced yet which will take you and your chosen party on quite the ordeal... I have actually foreshadowed a bit of whats to come in Hiho's quest if you take certain choices. We won't see the narrative in the next update though, we are looking to polish and fix up all current content. Which brings me to the future.

Future Plans and Developments.

We've seen a lot of work on this. From a block system for quests that have multiple steps that can be done in any order or a set of rigid steps, to a bespoke and custom tailored node based dialogue editor and new music loops for our OST. Our back end is taking some massive steps towards more steady and stable development, empowering us writers to iterate and push forward faster. We also saw the Patron vote between the next lewd scene to be added along with Verona.

Aya will be our peppy little professional monster slayer which you can partake in a contest with will be sharing her update with Verona, Nathan's saucy cook. They will be our first two minor character lewd scenes using a mixture of half bodies and then fully animated CG's.

For some images and such on the new node system, Aya, and later a sneak peak on the lewd scenes to come up you can spy us out on Tumblr, Twitter, or Patreon.

Seems like someone haven't played the patreon release. The camera does follow the character. Space centers it to the character and lmb moves the character itself, mmb moves the camera around.

Thanks! We definitely have a long way to go. Combat is still barebones and basically just a mock up of what we plan eventually. All the NPC sprites in the town need to be animated (atm they are just still sketches) and there will be another companion added.

Inventory system will be rather simplified compared to most RPG's out there, maybe along the lines of ShadowRun. We'll have to talk about it in developer chat and also poke our community and get a bit of feedback. We don't want an extremely complex inventory system or expansive though, something a tad realistic and grounded. I think around Ost'Ko being added who will be our fourth companion we MAY begin the actual narrative and quest of the game and our introduction mission and cinematic may be around then. This is quite a few releases away though.

Next release up will be adding two minor character lewd scenes and polishing on our earlier quests and dialogue. Our text editor is hecking amazing and our programmer is a gosh darn wizard.

Happy to field any questions here or the U18 chat of course! Suggestions always welcome, critique and criticism and such. This is a learning experience and every bit of support is stellar to us atm.

Oh uh, well I don't think we can really help you much there. It might be possible we'll throw in a "lock camera to character" option but for the most part the roaming camera is an intended feature.

Our maps are going to get huge, they're drawn on digital canvases that can be several meters across in actual space. You could almost wallpaper a room with the maps we already have haha.

So for now spacebar will be the function to draw back to your character. Tethering and leashing the camera to never leave the character isn't the way we'll be going about the project. Its a lot like how ShadowRun or Baldurs Gate handled their camera but we've giving the player the option to snap back with spacebar.

being able to poke around with the camera is something pretty common in games like this and being able to move while focusing on another point is one of those features. Though I've been thinking about a fog of war sort of effect for things that are just too simply far based on rigging but yeah.

I'm not asking you to dock camera to the character permanently, just move a docking procedure to LMB. It'll be more understandable if you don't gave an any clue on controls in a game itself. And it'll be more comfortable, especially for, you know, the one-handed playgame.

Haha oof, I argued with Arbz about that for about 4 hours until he actually saw what I meant. he was suffering from a case of extreme eye fatigue! The characters lines look markedly better in game, as well as its not nearly choppy like that.

Not animated but you can see her head was sharpened up quite a bit! Neither me nor Arbuz have any idea how to upload a gif that doesn't end up being horrifically choppy...

On all females across the board? That's not actually anything that crossed any of our teams mind to be honest! I suppose we can take a look at that later on in the project. Currently the fuzz doesn't bother most of our backers and such so it won't be priority number one of course. But we can definitely take a look at adding it as an option once we are further along and our main mechanical dev goals are met, which are:

Fully Animated NPC Sprites
Relationship Tracking
Tarot Reader (Tells you stats etc)

and our "possibles"

And a few other things. I'm missing a few as I am crunching to write right now and at the same time respond here so I've missed a few I just can't expend the brain compute to remember right now. But we can look into the pubic hair if it gets raised more as an issue.

The next round of girls to vote on are in, essentially the next update is going to feature a full on brothel! Also for you scalie fans (who isn't amiright) there will be another Naga lady quite like Hiho in the brothel! Well... Not QUITE like Hiho, much, much lewder than Hiho, and probably knows some "interesting" ways to use that long tail of hers in ways Hiho never thought of ;).

We'll be working hard to bring you the next public test demo, which will include updated combat... Until we get combat though we don't want to post the next public test since our current mock up of combat has been raising quite a few questions and many are extremely confused and starting to think this is legitimately all we have coming... Expect combat to evolve heavily coming up soon though. If you have ever played Kingdom Death many of the idea's that they have are what we are going to be applying to the combat system for us. With that, cards are not yours! They are the AI's, so much confusion (including myself when I first tried combat) revolved around that aspect.

Oh and I am curreting (shhh) secretly writing up the lore for the "Sahra / Sarhara" (which do you guys prefer? Tell me, help shape how anthro's proper will show up!) which no one but U18 will know I'm doing aside from certain members of our team actually. These are the precursors of many of the hybrids you are seeing and... Suffice to say the backstory behind how these hybrids were made and why they exist will be extremely heartbreaking and explored in the game further.

Been awhile! But we're very busy so I can just copy paste the changelog that Arbuz wrote.

Characters are now travelling the city. Although this is still primitive, more advanced behaviours will be added soon to bring life to the city. We implemented the money, inventory, quests, experience/level/abilities systems. Even if their interfaces are still in a placeholder state. Another notable change is the new cheats options menu, which allows accessing some game breaking settings (obviously not recommended).

Changelog:

Hera 2 part quest, portrait, animated sprite and smutting.
New AI system allowing NPC crowd to walk around town and do tasks, chat, buy, move objects, patrol, travel...
New Alchemy shop location in the trade district.
New Order shrine location in the old docks. World map (WiP).
Add Order priest sprite and dialogue.
Add Dee's master dialogue.
Add Lin portrait, animated sprite (front + back), and dialogue.
Animated sprites with modular parts for random NPC (front + back).
Pesh animated sprites. Improve the chatter system, allowing
NPC to talk to each-other, using the dialogue editor.
Add the items and inventory system, take and drop items from containers.
Implement levels and experience system: gain exp, unlock/manage party abilities and slots (temporary UI).
Add cheats to the options menu: Set player money and level, quests states, unlock portrait, smut settings, player location, companions in the party, possess any character.
Implement the money system, taking the game difficulty level into account.
Zoom key shortcuts: +/- and page up/down.
Implement the new quest objectives and hints system in all the quests.
Allows disabling quest hints in the new game window.


Dialogue editor:

New properties: skip, fallback, break, single child, never, random response direct reference, or condition.
Properties value auto-completion, characters history, max width.
Add money related features: addMoney, isMoney, <$money> Add experience related features:
AddExperience.
Allow adding comments to nodes.
Metadata properties (key/value pairs).
Fix response properties copy/paste, add copy/paste properties shortcuts (Alt+C Alt+V).
Allow editing the smut scenes settings via the setStage method.

We are having a vote between two new characters over at our Patreon right now, and at the same time introducing a new race to the universe!


Kobolds! Kobolds are their own subgenus of LizardFolk and aren't simply the diminutive "orphaned" lizardfolk. They have a history of being nocturnal pack hunters and have evolved along those lines, which gives a kobold an extraordinarily quick wit and a high degree of situational awareness.

Crepuscular and clever, they'll be in our game soon!

Writer and such for the game... so with Goldra we have an agreement with Cloud Meadow (Team Nimbus) that we can utilize her for extra content to potentially lewd scenes with a few caveats though. We're not sure how the Nimbus team would feel about us expanding on her or such, we don't actually talk much with them, to be honest. After a hefty delay, we finally have enough content to push update 12 to live. This update revamps combat adding in our attrition mechanics. As you take injuries it will lower a threshold to the overall health of the character and party, meaning damage accumulates between fights. You need to eat food/recovery items between combat or rest at an inn/campfire. We are really working on bringing combat to a point where we are happy with it, and players are enjoying it. Combat no longer takes place in instanced maps and will take place in the overworld now!

We would like to thank and apologize everyone who stuck with us through the delays... and to do that we are making the patron build content available to anyone who paid $5 since September, which was our original release target. We've realized there was a bottleneck in our ability to generate art assets at a hasty pace, and so we've hired on Sixies to help! Art content should accelerate Arbuz, ZlaSlova, and Sixies on the team.

We've implemented a new patreon code sytem that makes it so your patreon code is tied to unlocking the patreon gallery! So the trick is to uh... well, pledge or to play through the scenes :). Ey there! We're absolutely launching on steam when we get a complete product. We've been suggested to (by a publisher) to release on Early Access first, but... we're not too sure about that. The current plan is to release our game on steam when it's finished.

I've talked to other platforms as well, DLSite, Nutaku, GoG. Steam is the clearest objective and goal though. GoG is interesting, we always had an SFW version of the game planned and mainly because back when we started the game Steam required any NSFW/Adult content to be in a patch only. So we're taking that idea and asked GoG what we would need to cut, what we could leave in, etc. It's frustrating because they essentially told us we needed to have less sexual content than The Witcher for instance. Pointing that out to them made them walk back a few of their demands, but still, the requests are pretty strict compared to what they seem fine with already existing on their platform.

Well I can only do so much in this format haha, but I will try my best on U18's limitations as a talking' thingy. But yeah, kick punch block, here we go!

Well everything is in our world, it's a whole breathing living world. The Zahra (Upright more humanoid anthros) originate in an area much like Kazakhstan, mostly steppes and with bands of taiga but mostly rolling steppes. We may change this up but yeah. It isn't exactly an earth parallel though as there are very large solitary trees that poke up out of the steppe, a unique species to our setting. Like the Tigirekskiy Nature Reserve, eventually going into a more denser forested region furthest north. They're on a large peninsula (almost a subcontinent)

The Zahra are the 3 humanoids are all cousins, and the big hunchie is more like what a Neanderthal would be to humans. I haven't named them yet and Arbuz can't think of one either. They might be labelled as Zahra to outsiders as they'll just paint them all with the same brush, but I want to differentiate the two to avoid confusion with the reader. In-lore racism sometimes doesn't come across as clear and people might see them as the same species. There will be feline, canine, cervidae, mink, and ursine are planned. Still tinkering all their looks but Arbuz feels happy with the latest ones. They have dimorphism but not quite like humans. Their females are active in warfare, hunting, labor, etc. Women at home will have differences in the sense of role when back home, at camp, etc. Women may gravitate more to certain "paths" which is what they call vocations.

Their culture has been extremely altered after a human/drow nation pushed their collective shit in and slapped them around for years. Taking Zahra at leisure and trying to make them into a replacement/competitor for "warslaves." Lots of backstory there, basically big ass humans bred for war. After Ohmes was repelled by the help of outside nations, the Zahra banded together in a confederacy. They're an extremely ritualistic culture which has a heavy focus on warfare. When a child comes of age they're allowed to choose a path that they are expected to master, once they pass that mastery they can "walk" down other paths as well, but there is a heavy pressure to move towards paths of the military. Failing to master a path is a huge knock to your honour and you may be exiled from your current tribe. There are rituals that can change the course of history even, if a tribe does something that is so against the agreed good of the Zahra or breaks the rites and rules of society, they may fall victim to a trial of absorption, where the heads of that tribe will be killed off and their people will be distributed based on contribution to the campaign. There is even a trial of annihilation, where if not only the leadership is to blame but the entirety of the people are considered so tainted and such a threat that they are killed to the last man, woman, child. Completely stricken from existence. Disputes by tribes can be settled via trials, and not all trials are to the death or even combat-based. A singular leading figure also can settle disputes, their rulings are held as absolute. An attempt is made not to interfere too much and to allow people and their tribes a degree of freedom. This is all born out of a fear of weakness to the outside world. The Ohmish expedition has given them a fear of outside kingdoms and is why they've banded together and became extremely hardened for warfare. Also, a plague earlier than that shaped their culture in ways that still affect them to this day. It kept outsiders away from their lands for quite some time too and isolated them from moving to the outside world. They used to be viewed as diseased beasts basically.

Right now the homeland tribes don't interact with the outside world much. There is some trade but it is extremely limited. Though there is a nomadic tribe that spends most of its time travelling the continent. They will travel to certain areas, set up, work the land briefly and even hire themselves out as mercenaries or labourers, they will trade with nearby cities etc. They tend to not move too close to the cities because they can get extremely pissed off by the strain on the local resources for while they visit. As for where you might encounter them in the game... not sure if we will have them in the game yet? We have ideas of how or where you might. A group from one of the nomadic tribes settling near Kaldea to hire themselves out and trade is perhaps one way. In the form of hired mercenaries is another... or the rarer but also likely "exiles," who were a tribe that managed to survive a trial of Annihilation and fled. The nomadic tribes original purpose was to hunt these exiles down... the exiles actually drastically differ from the homeland Zahra because the split was still when the plague affected them (briefly after Ohmes) so the Homeland and Exile Zahra mutated mildly from one another due to dealing with the plague in separate ways.

This is all very hard to keep track of on U18 haha, so I might have missed some, made mistakes, etc. Quite a lot of the lore is still being edited, I've held back on some lore as well for favour of exploring it in the game later. Etc. Here's a map of the world btw, but even it is still a work in progress!

Sure thing, our dick-cord has a channel specific to spoilery and lore talk "#pff-spoilers."

Humans, elves, and ogres are all evolved from a common root species so they can do the humping between each other. We did a little wizard-snek magic and bullshittium and made it so the lizardfolk are pretty much omni-breeders... like xenomorphs but much less violent haha. They can breed with most sapients but we are probably going to cut that off at Zahra and make it so they are interbreedable with the root that spawned the ogres etc. It's getting muddy and basically we want to keep people from shipping sapient snake people with ferals and shit... so we've written ourselves into a weird corner there haha. It's our biggest "fantasy biology" element so far and it wasn't my doing I was semi against them being able to make babies with other species. Zahra and humans have no intercompatibility to my knowledge right now and that's how I am going forward writing it. So humans and our furries can't produce offspring.

This is our first part of this storyline, so this is Part 1 with Build 17 going to be Part 2. This update is a deep dive into the political world of Kaldea, rife with important choices that will have grave consequences throughout the story. This update brings in the alternative path for resolving the second Main Story Quest we've added in. This is the second part of the quest, which isn't quite done just yet. We've cut out a special boss fight which was planned for the end of the quest with a destructible environment, special abilities, and a whole bunch of little nifty things! But we are holding off to finalize this fight until our combat-rework patch and have added a placeholder boss fight. This quest will also have a much more overt choice that won't just pay off in the future. The end rewards of this quest depend whether you hand the fort over to Kaldea or Atlathka. Moira of Alenai. Hint hint ;). The Alenai scene has appropriately been moved to after the quest and as always we have provided a save named Build 17 which takes you to the content of this patch. Again... hint hint!

In the future, our immediate plans are to expand Hiho's content and add her next companion quest... not only that but Moira will have revisit scenes! With all new options and dialogue. I will try and do my best to add in more revisit scenes if time permits, I would eventually like to mirror Aurelia and the way every scene plays out shorter but differently when you revisit them. Try the game out if you haven't! We'd love to hear feedback.
