It can cause some weirdness in areas where there's a big difference between neighboring frames in the original animation, but overall the results can be really good.

It is worth noting that exporting as a png sequence and then making a gif out of that doesn't butcher the color palette. Or at least that way you are the architect of your own demise.

Huh, does a pretty good job. Some issue with gif to gif files.Mainly Artifacting. However, gif to mp4, has no issues there. It's still a tad buggy though. Crashed quite a bit.
Some gif's it refuses to compile.

One day, it would be nice to be able to upload mp4/webm.

Kinda defeats the point of simplicity of the program then. Yours has less noise, but it seems to lose smoothness. Some gif's lose a bit of fluidity, when frames are added. So too much can hurt it.

The program is garbage at managing gif palettes and that's not even its main purpose anyway.
Take a look at the file size difference too.

You really don't want to just use raw gifs this thing spits out, it does the job but breaks all of the bones.

in the x266 tab increase the bitrate

I've been playing around with the settings for a bit and I have come to the conclusion that any gif that has high resolution will just outright kill my VRAM usage on my GPU (it's a GTX 1080).

However if I downscale the gif, increase the framerate and then upscale it with a different program I have, I might be able to produce some good results (here is hoping).

The program I have can also upscale images and mp4 files.

It worked and the gif is looking crisp with a high framerate.
However I now seem to have a 1.2 GB gif on my computer lol. So I reckon I'll have to convert it a high quality mp4 with higher fps instead

So I was using the newer versions of DAIN, i noticed that it refuses to playback the gif at normal speeds if it is even twice the frame (but under 50). But on the older versions, as long as its under 50 FPS, it plays back fine for the most part. Might be a odd bug, but i dont like the newer versions.

Some gifs use duplicate frames to increase the delay instead of ACTUALLY using frame delay.
That makes DAIN multiply those duplicate frames so the end result has TONS of excess frames.
I just deleted all the duplicate frames.

I learned a way to "cheat" the program. If you put an input of 25 for 2x. It will smooth out to 50, same with 12.5 for 4x. I think interpolation mode 4 speeds it properly this time

I don't know what frame delay you've set, since they only show up as 0 in Photoshop, but GIF can only do 50fps, so the minimum frame delay should be 0.02, which still doesn't look quite like your video when I test it on the 0 frames. I think you need to remove some tween frames or use another format.

Like I said it was my first animation so I'm not really sure. I believe I had the slower frames set for .5 and the faster ones set as either .1 or .2 (don't have the psd file on me to look at it) but it comes out just fine when you save and open in ifranview so I dunno how to make it work for web pages.

but I did try to get DAIN_APP to work on my computer and it says something about my video card. I have an Nvidia Geforce GTX750 which is a 4gb vid card so not sure why that's not strong enough for something like this.

The slower frames showed up as .1 and .2 in PS when I opened it, so my guess would be that you set the fast ones to .01 since even .02 looks slower than the video, and this makes browsers behave oddly.
Technically, GIF can do 100fps, but the lower delays vary a lot on the support side, and most browsers usually round it up to .1. Irfanview probably respects the data better than browsers, and I don't even think Photoshop does GIF quite right.

As for your problem with DAIN, you probably just don't have enough VRAM to handle your files. Your CUDA version should be supported, but from what I tried on the Colab test of DAIN (AMD user, so can only try it remotely), it is very memory intensive, 8GB for 720p files, 16GB for 1080p. If I haven't found the wrong specs for your card that would mean that you are likely very limited in the resolution you can deal with, or possibly under a minimum to even get it going.

It's because whoever made the gif is a fuckup and made four duplicates of every frame, so you only get the right interpolation between a fourth of the movement. There might be a duplicate frame detector you can turn on to fix it without having to edit the image, but here is one with the frames manually edited. Can't do the interpolation itself since I run AMD.

Or rather, I can't quite YET.
Good news, someone is making versions of a bunch of these algorithms that aren't vendor locked.

Here's a link to someone making a tool to use them, but you'll have to make do with command line version for now:

It's still not quite there, probably due to the ports using older versions of the interpolator, and there's not much control over the output settings. GIF output turns into a noisy mess and some players choke on the mp4 output due to not supporting the format it encodes it in. CAIN gives some really nice results for some animations though and runs much faster than DAIN. There's talk of a third interpolator getting added too that apparently gets nice results, but I haven't tried it.

Well, there's a lot of ways to make it fuck up, so let's start with the simplest one: Do you have any idea what Command Line Interface means or are you just double clicking the exe file?
If so, I recommend reading up on how to run stuff through cmd exe to get familiar with it. Just type it into the start menu search.

If you are past that and actually at the point where you can give the program all the instructions it needs I might be more help if you can give an error message.

and see how it does for you, or just run the "GUI" (bit premature but it's what he named it).
If you do it the first way, be aware that it's kind of finicky since he's got it set up so you only get the compiled files while logged in, and there's some wierd quirk where it looks for its required files in your current directory, so it screws up unless you move the files to the exe directory and make sure you are working from that directory. I'm not even sure how he got it to break that way.
There's not much reason to skip the GUI though, since you can just set it to not do the video encoding step if you want to do something manually before it.

Actually, it's not that this program insults the animator but actually shows how skilled you're as one, becausr the program is just using the original animation as reference. Just look at Dacad's animations. They're alredy good, but when you smooth things out with this program, it looks even more incredible. Independently of the program's potencial, it still will depend on good quality products to make things better, so actually the animators should be proud of this.

What you mean to say is that in order for this program to work, it needs more frames. More frames does not mean better when it comes to animation, and having more frames doesn't automatically make you more skilled. I personally know a few animators and they definitely feel insulted by people claiming this program and others like it make their stuff "better".

It ignores their design decisions, it destroys timing, and makes the product look worse. When you're animating by 2s or 4s, that's not laziness. That's an explicit design decision. When you smooth the animation out, motion looks artificial, and unnatural.

interpolation was never designed to smooth out animated art. There are times where it can work, yes, but it's mainly used for live-action video. 90% of the examples in this thread look objectively worse with this app. There are a FEW, such as DACAD's animations that work pretty well with it, but it's by no means better.

I get not liking the "I made it better than the artist" thing, but if people are just messing with editing art for fun & aren't pretending they're talented then what much does it matter? Whenever I see great art done with a fursona that has an ugly color scheme, I edit the colors to be more pleasing to look at. that's honestly the main reason i've never posted my results in here. I've tried requests, but they usually come out looking like ass, so i never bothered posting.
