The reason the father is an asshole is because he sugarcoated his daughter's life before she was to literally be thrown to the wolves to make babies. Had he been more open and honest with her for most of her life, then maybe she'd have been a lot less spoiled and more realistic on the situation. He figured giving her everything she wanted before having to marry her off would somehow make things better. No it freaking doesn't! He failed as a parent by being an enabler and doormat for both his daughter and wife. And now he's paying for it.
And I can't count how many times I've heard someone talk about a mother killing someone over a screw-up. That's common as hell, and not to be taken literally all the time. And yes, corporal punishment was very common in past eras. In the case of anthro species, taking off part of their tails is basically a barbaric way of giving them a reminder of what they did wrong. Meanwhile in real life the equivalent was to be put in a pillory, whipped, stoned, caned, maimed by removal of fingers or toes, or even castrated.
But corporal punishment doesn't mean war. A hot tempered mother doesn't mean war. I means the consequences of the princess possibly running away could be bad. But that doesn't mean war. So why the hell is it that war is your first go-to for a completely fictional story that hasn't even hinted at it, nor has the author said anything about it either.
Therefor my logic still stands. War is just one of many things that could happen. But it's not the only thing that could happen.
