They are organic metal. There are several (near infinite) combinations of creatures in the series that don't line up with normal depictions of animals/monsters. Emerald is a mantis, but there are other mantis characters that have different body type/features. So you won't always see the same features among the same types. They also don't follow the stereotypical traits that people assume of them such as biting off heads. Not saying it's impossible to happen, but very unlikely unless the character(s) come from that sort of background (likely tribal). Animal instincts are almost non-existent for how characters act and usually use their traits as an extension of themselves (it's different for every character).
