This was back in the late 90s. Furries were not yet known for art theft, and "do not distribute" was widely respected. Sibe was the first major art pirate, and he hadn't yet hit the scene. Trump was selling the comic, so back then, having someone do that was a serious slap in the face.

I met Trump at FC around 2007 or so. He had another guy at his booth, acting as translator. He was not a man of many words, but he was polite. I just told him I liked his art style, and bought one of his folios.

The thing is that he wasn't selling it in America back then. The only way a foreigner could get it was by going to Japan or through praying to the gods of Amazon. He even blew up at the translators for daring to make it so foreigners could read it. He was genuinely offended that some gaijin had made it understandable to other gaijin.

Apparently he has mellowed since then, but the way he responded really made him a posterchild for Japanese xenophobia.

Even so, from what I recall (having been around when it came out in Japanese; cub stuff was still a huge deal back then) the majority of the outrage was about its theft. Maybe I was 'out of the loop,' but I would have thought the anger over it being translated was the trouble potentially involved with US law enforcement over it.

Back then the States weren't even on his radar. The only thing that brought it to his attention were the filthy gaijin thieves.
