What happened to the Inkbunny archive? Anonymous 2026/03/15 12:04:19 No.2552600
The site is still up and everything but most of the posts are missing now. It's almost like there was a massive purge of artwork without any warning.

I specifically noticed Cubber's gallery being entirely missing despite being there before, and some other artists like fivvv had their galleries removed.

If you turn off the grid view on fivvv's folder, it actually shows the file count and folder sizes of everything that used to be there, but if you click on anything there's still nothing in any folder, and enabling hidden files doesn't seem to help either.

Mostly more popular artists seem to have their galleries intact, which is annoying because those are the artists who are most likely to be archived anyways.

Try looking on the archive for older or lesser-known artists who have deleted their art, you'll find that a lot of the galleries are empty even if there used to be files there

I’ve noticed this has been happening for about four months now. I’m a pretty obsessive archivist, and if you check this list of inactive artists, there are over 200 of them. The worst part is that most of the links that used to point to Inkbunny backups are now dead.

https://jmp.sh/AjZoyrDy

My theory is that it might be a bug. Maybe their AI system is overwriting things? Unless it’s some kind of hack, nothing about this makes me think it’s a moderator action it really feels like a bug.

I’d like to contact the person who runs this archive to ask about it, but I have no idea where I could report this issue.

artists going nuclear you mean? well, sometimes artists just want to burn the bridges for one reason or another especially when it comes to cub content and just want to pretend that stuff never existed by erasing it all

I think you may have misunderstood the issue being discussed. The problem is with the archive itself the Inkbunny backup site seems to have been compromised.

Unless you’re suggesting that they somehow did this directly on the backup site, which would be… well, pretty unlikely.

If people want to delete stuff, just let them.

There's a difference between an archivist preserving stuff that could be lost to time, and assholes going against the wishes of artists that don't want to be associated with old art anymore.

Isn’t that exactly why we’re here? Isn’t that the whole point of this list of inactive artists? To recover and preserve the art not to track down artists’ addresses and tell their neighbors they draw cub content just to punish them for stopping.

If people want to delete stuff, just let them.

OK BUT... It’s simply so that we, the people who enjoy this kind of content, can still access it. Knowing that the backup is damaged is really frustrating for archivists. Artists absolutely have the right to delete their accounts, of course. We’re not here to stop artists from removing their work they’ve already done it, and there’s nothing we can do about that anyway, lol.

What we’re actually discussing here is whether there’s any way to recover the backup.

I see what you're getting at. But at the same time if an artist deletes their account and art on IB, whatever the reason, then put plainly it should also be removed from the archive.

Anything else goes against the artist's wishes and just comes across as disrespectful.

The argument of "But I enjoy it and want everyone to be able to still access it" just sounds a little self-entitled? Is it really that crazy of a take?

There’s a kind of unspoken rule on the internet: once something is posted, it’s never truly gone. As an artist or public figure, you have to understand that your posts, videos, and artwork will be copied and reposted whether you want it or not. It’s like an invisible agreement we all accept when we put something online: it’s no longer under your full control.

The most control you really have is over your own account and how directly you tie your real identity to your pseudonym. You have the right to delete your account and remove content from places where you posted it or from platforms that allow removals, like e621.

Look at artists who’ve deleted everything. No one knows who they are anymore, and they’ve faded out of the spotlight. Their work may still exist in backups for people who appreciated it and for archivists.

I tend to side with the public the consumers. Artists have their rights, of course, but the audience deserves to keep something too. Even if that sounds selfish, once copies can be made, it’s no longer entirely yours. Your account is yours… but your art becomes public.

Interesting discussion, but I think you’ll continue leaning more toward the artists’ side, while I lean more toward the public. Everyone has their own perspective. That said, that’s not really why we’re here this thread was created for another purpose, for archivists so let’s get back to the main issue about the archive site.

What actually happened to this site? Is there any way to contact the owner? Is it possible to restore the backup to what it was before? It seems like the files are still there, just inaccessible, which really feels like some kind of bug.

Does anyone have any idea how we could reach the site owner to let them know or ask whether this was a bug, an error, or something done intentionally?

I feel like saying "That's not really why we're here" is a bit rude considering we're activly disscussing the morality of archives.

Sure that may not be what you wanted to disscuss to begin with, but trying to close down a disscussion because it's not the one you want is a bit controlling.

While yes, nothing posted onto the internet is truely gone forever I feel that counts more towards people storing files locally on their PC.

A website ripping all those files and hoasting them online for everyone to continue to access without the artist's permission or conscent its a bit of a different story though.

Well, you want to discuss the morality of these archives and that’s completely your right and part of your freedom of expression to disagree. But it’s also my right to disagree with you, and realistically, we’re not going to get anywhere with this.

I think we’ve both already made our points. There’s not much left to add, and neither of us is going to change sides. I’m not avoiding the debate I just don’t think it’s going to be productive anymore. So instead of going in circles, repeating the same arguments, it makes more sense to step back and leave it here. Are you sure you want to go back to this?

You never know when an artist is going to wipe everything they’ve made that’s exactly why backups exist. Like I said before, even if it’s “unfair” to the artist that their wish to delete everything gets bypassed by archiving, the reality is that most of the time people don’t even get a chance to save anything before it’s gone.

These systems exist because of situations where artists suddenly disappear and take everything with them. I spent a lot of time listing inactive or vanished artists for one simple reason: I’ve seen incredible work I cared about turn to dust, and I wanted it back or at least preserved for others who appreciated it too.

If it comes down to choosing between one artist’s preference and a 100 people who valued that work and feel the loss, I’ll choose the 100! I’d choose to make 100 people happy, even if it means making 1 person unhappy to put it more simply.

You prefer to side with the artist, and I respect that. So can we respect each other and move on?

Issue resolved! Apparently this was caused by an internal problem, but from what I understand, everything should come back eventually.

Looks like we’ll be without those artists’ files for the next few days, weeks or even months, but hey on the bright side, at least we’re getting them back at some point.

Archivists win! Let this be a lesson not to rely on a single lifeboat forever. Once everything’s back to normal, I’m definitely going to build a better personal backup.

Hey. If it's not too much to ask, can you or anybody here share the link to this Inkbunny archive?

Even it's some post are missing it sounds like this is a good chance as any to see some of the artists that I miss out seeing before it got deleted.
Not to mention I never even heard that anyone created an archive for Inkbunny until now and I'm not getting anything from Google searching it.>>2553758

The moderators on 18chan can be really strict about certain things. Because of a number of users misusing the site, it ended up getting banned from being mentioned here through keyword filters. I think the moderators should reconsider some of their rules and be less punitive and less uptight about certain user behavior. For example, I find it ridiculous when a thread gets locked just because people were angry at artist X or planning a commission for character Y.

That said, I can still help you indirectly. I have a document that explains how to recover artists and similar stuff. It might not be the best time to use it right now since a lot of things are still missing due to the current issue, but hey take a look anyway. It should help you a lot. Start with the first page and follow the links from there:

I think you should’ve just moved on. Freedom of expression doesn’t really seem to be your strong point. How would a bunch of people talking about an artist on a forum with fewer than 5,000 visits a month one of its least visited sections actually affect them? Less drama, please.

When I say that, I’m simply talking about people having the right to criticize an artist’s actions without being punished not harassing or going after them. I’ve respected your opinion so far, but you’re the only one who’s used hostile language like “controlling” or “fuck you.” Maybe take a step back and relax a bit. With how aggressive you’re being, I’d guess you’re an artist makes me wonder which one. Were you the one who messaged me on Inkbunny after disappearing when I shared the archive?

Whether you believe me or not, I don’t have any other motive for sharing this. And understand this: if I actually wanted to harm artists, I easily could but I don’t. I just want to share and preserve art. If you really think I’m some kind of monster for sharing a list and helping people recover artwork, that’s your call.

My list has around 3,000 views I’ve helped 3,000 people.

If I wanted to harm artists, I’d be going after them in real life or sending their work to their families which I have ZERO interest in doing.

If you want to talk, keep your claws sheathed! I haven’t bitten you so far, but you keep snarling and barking at me.

"The argument of "But I enjoy it and want everyone to be able to still access it" just sounds a little self-entitled? Is it really that crazy of a take?"

Yes. That is a very crazy and insane take. Because it's HISTORY.

You are basically saying this:

"All Art, from all history, be it building, paintings, Pottery, books, War Plans, Journals, Letters, Documents and so all, should be burned and destroyed the very second the Creator dies"

^ Sit on that and think about it. Famous Paintings should be burned and destroyed? The Constitution of the US should be burned and destroyed? Math, Art, Culture, HISTORY should be forgotten and destroyed? Every single video game not made THIS year, 2026, should all be banned, destroyed, and removed?

What is "Art" On the "Internet" So uniquely special that IT is allowed to be destroyed and removed from history, but you are fine with everything else staying, being documented, preserved, and archived? Should every movie ever made before 2026 be destroyed and removed? How about Music? Books? How about all the Math, Science, and Philosophy that has been collected, grown, expanded, and continued for 10k+ years? Destroy all of that too?

Artists can remove THEIR copy of a work. Sure. But they should have no right, nor any say, over copies OTHER people have or created. Copyright Law, Fair Use. The law exists for a reason. People have the right to preserve, backup, and archive stuff, even copyrighted stuff from other people.

So yeah. Your take is VERY insane and not normal, logical, and common take

On the first page, there’s a redirect link explaining recovery methods and listing multiple sites you can use. I also make it clear that relying on just one source isn’t enough if you want to recover as much of an artist’s work as possible you’ll also need their old usernames.

For all archivists or anyone trying to find artist X or Y, I can help, but I recommend doing it yourselves as well. I’ve included a basic tutorial in the link on the first page of the archive.

If an artist isn’t on the deserter list yet, give it some time. The list is incomplete and always will be new artists keep disappearing. I can add them to the recovery list, but keep in mind that the main Inkbunny backup is currently broken and should be back in a few days.

In the future, I plan to allow users to become collaborators in this art recovery project. With around 15 reasonably committed people, it should be possible to cover most of Inkbunny and prevent content from disappearing.

Alright, I’ll add them to my list. Here’s what I managed to find try to be a bit more proactive and read the tutorial on the first page (it redirects you). These were pretty easy to recover at least something from.

They’re not really my type of artists, but archiving is archiving:

I can see why. I used to draw a lot until they got lazy and relying only on AI for work and patreon stuff. Eventually delating their Inkbunny account with him piss off that nobody liked that his fans didn't like how he abandond drawing in favor of using AI in all his work.

Really wish I took the time to save all his work before he went and delated all his work on Inbunny.
