Oof... There's a lot to respond to here. But I'd like to try and correct/clear some things up.
I hope to make fun and interesting characters that are deeper than just porn, with dedicated personalities set in a developed world.
That is, quite succinctly, my MO. If I want to succeed at that, sure I've got to be open to critique, but not everyone will be right; I can't follow -all- feedback or please everyone.
But man, some of you really don't like Nytro. That's fine, I guess, to not like a character. No one's going to like all of my OCs equally. It still sucks to hear intense dislike for a thing you've spent years making and refining, especially if he's going to be a/the main character of my story, which also doesn't even exist yet. Nytro used to be much worse, so from my POV, he is quite toned back as far as design/edginess, but I get not everyone will see that. A lot of OCs start out sub-optimal in some way, and I tweak and change them over time.
Design wise, Nytro has a specific role to fill, like all of my characters. It's why I like making so many of such variety. He's supposed to be fairly masculine but feminine enough, slightly taller than avg, slightly bigger than avg dick (by furry standards..or among my lineup anyway) etc. His personality is harder to pin down because I've really only just begun deciding on things I like about him that haven't made it to image yet, let alone a comic. I get that there's no way anyone could know that stuff though, so of course I don't hold it against, but a lot of the dislike here seemingly stems from colour scheme and scar? Are all scars cringey by default? Arbitrarily placed scars maybe? He's one of the only OCs of mine with any at all, heterochromia too, with a reason that's written into his story--granted, hasn't been out there for people to see yet. Or is it the presence of all these things at once that's doing it? Is it the design of the scar/eye itself? Stuff like that. I'm not married to the idea of all of these things being present. If in the end, it works out better that something is reworked, then I usually go through with it. There's a lot about his previous iterations that were removed or changed because it -didn't- work. I'm guessing it's just a vocal minority here, as I do get a good impression of people enjoying him overall. If there's stuff about his design that could lessen the edge whilst not changing him too much, I'm always open to hear, but somehow I don't know...I feel like those that don't like him just won't ever like him, and changing too much just makes a new character.
Speaking of which, it's no secret that I'm working on more male OCs, also with varying builds, so if you feel there's too much Nytro-filler, I guess you're in luck? I just have a lot of girls and usually draw girls cause... I like girls. And have mostly gotten my support from drawing girls. As for Ayn, she's a very 'reactive' sex partner. Despite the porn volume, she's not turned on 24/7, and she could just as easily enjoy a night with Twix as she could with Nytro, or Massak, etc. Her 'baggage' is more just bad memories, self-doubt regarding her capabilities and responsibilities..it's not soul-crushing, it's just a character flaw. She needs to find more value in herself other than just 'I'm hot', which is a big part of her story arc that's yet to be made.
I think if I really want to adjust perceptions, I need to work on more canon, in-character artwork from time to time, but I also would hope people don't take every pic I draw as canon.
Had been wondering about transposing Tala, Rehzi into the scifi plot too. Maybe as minor or bg characters, or maybe just for fun, who knows. No ideas yet, but fun to think about.
