Jack By Nikkimory_Art Last night, Jack (our favorite nocturnal mechanical maintenance opossum) was out on her rounds, closing work orders and generally having her own special brand of a good time. Not very many people work nights at Shift-Tec, especially in the labs, so Jack pretty much has the run of the place. There's much less light, it's much easier to service the various bits of equipment when nobody's trying to use them, and sometimes the occasional night owl can be lured into a little fun.
On this particular night, Jack happened across a cell phone left carelessly behind by a centrifuge. She'd always suspected it anyway, but working around lab folks had pretty well convinced her that the absent-minded scientist trope was entirely real and widespread. The ones with the lab coats were always shedding various belongings as they went about thinking their science thoughts! Some of the goodies that wouldn't be missed would end up being repurposed for Jack's various hidey-holes around the facilities, but the expensive or obviously sentimental things she'd either take to Lost and Found (which is what she called Afolabi's locked desk drawer) or return to a place the poor research-type would be likely to see it. Assuming Jack could figure out who it belonged to, of course.
This time, it was hardly a mystery. The phone was sitting atop a pile of notes written in an obsessively neat hand, with every sheet carefully noted with name, date, department, and page number in the corner. Jack recognized the name, too! It belonged to a big kudu fella', a chemist. The kind with a real intimate relationship with glove boxes, fume hoods, and splash-proof goggles. Jack also happened to harbor a suspicion that he could really give it to somebody if properly motivated! Now to see about applying some motivation...
No fingerprint lock on the phone, which makes sense for somebody with hoofy fingers. Jack got ready to try out a few guesses on the PIN, like that model number prominently displayed on the centrifuge, but the phone opened right up as soon as she swiped. See, this is why she loved science types. Smart enough to set up geo-fenced trusted zones for more convenient, lock-free phone usage. Silly enough to not think about the consequences of marking the whole Shift-Tec complex as trusted.
Whiskers twitching up in a big grin, she zipped down her coveralls and popped open the camera app. Jack was going to leave him an invitation so unmistakable that even a forgetful science type couldn't misinterpret it. Maybe soon he'll consider staying late!
