Man, the pro "get out of the closet" paradigm isn't really all that good for people: the idea that it will go well or even be beneficial most of the time is simply wrong.
Definitely an issue with an agenda.

Whoa really?
That must be meant for shitty places.

The constant pressure of trying to stay hidden, pretend to be something, lying and the fear is destructive to almost everyone.

I guess it might be better to stay in the closet for people who risk of being thrown out by fucked up parents and for people in some lower school ranks but apart of this not coming out is a bad advice.

But apart of this - where can I find issue #1? I couldn't find it at any of the pages here.

There is no pressure to stay in the closet, since there's no pressure to get out of the closet unless you're a flamer. Let me collect the issues for you though, I'll make a post with them all in a second.

It amazes me that we've come so far in the FIFTEEN YEARS since this was first written that some people actually think coming out is no big deal. Almost as much as some people thinking that staying in the closet is a good idea or beneficial/necessary in general.

It's also a bit sad how much farther we have to go if people think coming out is only a problem in 'shitty places'. And that some think that wanting to be open and honest about who you are equates to 'no pressure to get out of the closet' for anyone other than 'flamers'.

Yeah I'd say there's an 'agenda'. It's called freedom (from persecution among other things) and basic human fucking rights.

Kind of the same here. Don't understand why though, I know everyone I know would be perfectly accepting of it, but I just can't tell anyone, even though some of my best friends are gay/lesbian.
I guess it really depends on the person, and the environnement they are in, although I'd say that most of the western world is overwhelmingly accepting of homosexuality nowadays (though that isn't true for everyone, of course).

>how I really am
You're human. Straight people are human. Gay people are human.
Some people, unfortunately, don't want to talk about sex with straight people or gay people.

Those people tend to be the exception and not the rule, and weren't the ones who were the problem to begin with anyway.

There are millions of little ways that heterosexual people project their sexuality, from holding hands in public to referring to their opposite-sex partner in conversation, to acceptably appropriate acts such as SFW body contact and kissing.

When two people of the same sex do that? They STILL regularly result in negative reactions in many areas - even "progressive" ones. The two worst occurrences of 'gay bashing' I've ever experienced were in San Francisco, and were triggered because I dared to hold my boyfriend's hand on a bus...

So yeah, we're all human. But the whole "I don't want to see anyone's sexuality!" thing tends not to play out that way; I've yet to meet someone who said that who regularly went up to a man and woman holding hands to say, "Stop that! That's inappropriate!" :p

I like this comic and all, but I don't want to go back to a time where we could lose our jobs and be subject to significant social stigma and even be evicted from apartments for being gay.

Sure, it still happens nowadays, but back then it was just the norm.

This comic is from 2001. You really think that was the dark ages of being gay? How old are you, 15?

By that time, it was pretty much being accepted. The city I lived in had a pride parade already. The big old-school stodgy company I worked for was encouraging people to go to Lambda meetings (remember those?) and "accept the gay" was manadatory for anyone that wasn't production. Districts were popping up in cities that tended to be gay, there may have been isolated incidents where someone was being discriminated against for that, but the ones I remember were someone being a flaming homosexual, like "bake my cake" man who went out of his way to "find" someone that didn't want to deal with him.

Now, what do we have? flaming homosexual boy with his cake, autistic retards screeching about how they should be able to diddle kids, the city I used to inhabit now has TWO pride parades, and people I know that have no idea I'm gay tell me they're getting fatigued by the media constantly trying to shove someone's dick down their throat. I have a co-worker like that, he's not gay but he's more than happy to chastise you for not being completely accepting of something you don't like.

I'd love to go back to 2001. I was accepted for who I was because I didn't let it define me, but in this day and age I literally had a former friend lecture me on how I needed to be more gay and how I should be happy to give up everything I've worked for for 30 years to do that.

It wasn't intended as therapy, it was intended as context, refuting the previous commenter's remark.

2001 was probably better than now for being gay, just because people weren't tired of having in their faces 24/7.

It depends on where you live.

In my country, despite mostly homophobic general population, early 2000s were in general much more tolerable for LGBT community. The gay people were portrayed in media either as freaks or clowns, but overall attitude was neutral, and a lot of resouce centers, human right, educational & social programms were established back in these days.

By now however there're a few legal acts in action were passed that criminalize certain activities, such as working with minors in schools etc., and violence against LGBT people are quite common and have (indirect) support by government that didn't interfere. Police often refuse to investigate such cases, the victims are usually being victimblamed for their "behaviour", and even some homicidal cases are eventually dropped or severity of charges are greatly reduced from cold-blood murder to gay-panic-self-protection-that-gone-too-far. And I'm not talking about some country that lives under Sharia Law, but an ordinary God-forsaken-neithet-first-nor-third-world country.

The one particular thing to say on topic: I used to order Circles from RabbitValley without any concerns back then, but now customs have legal right to confiscate my parcel if they spot any " indecent" items into invoice and (theoretically) prosecute me for porn smuggling.

Anyway, we need to move to /d if anyone wish to continue the discussion.

Unless you were out in like the boonies, I don't think any cities in the US would waste time prosecuting someone for homosexuality.

That said, we have come a ways since then with gay marriage being legal now everywhere in the US.

This comic makes me feel comfortable, happy and at the same time, a bit of sad.
I 've lived in east asia for whole my life and never imagined holding my boyfriend's hand in public.
Its culture is heavily unacceptable of gay things.
I wish i could come out of closet and invite my hetero / homosexual friends like in this comic, but it wasn't easy - that arouse me a sadness.
