first. my god this makes me so happy to see people actually post my work places. JEEZE that's been like a dream of mine for a while so Flux you get all the brownie points.

second, I think his sharp witted insult on the very next page more than makes up for Ryu's "fuck you"

to be honest, the pages were actually much more condensed in my storyboards, and I ended up spacing them out more in the hopes of not having the images consumed by dialogue. (also, ITTY BITTY IMAGES) so the fact "fuck you" ended up at the end of a page was honestly a total accident. luckily I'm doing some editing for next chapter beforehand so that sort of flub doesn't happen again.

I hope I'm not the only one who sees all the parallels between this comic and the comics/characters which zerofox made...

the whole scenario seems to be a copy pasta of zerofox's work

also the 2 little guardians remind me a lot of the 2 little guardians named eins and falz.

I wouldn't be surprised when the artist copy poses and other stuff from better artists, he's watching... that would explain the change of quality/style in almost every panel.

i can somewhat see the similarities to Falz and Enis. but the are all just general soldiers so sure they can be similar. for the art change, i personally don't notice it but it could be there and maybe the artist just has a inconsistent style still.
Also what other parallels are there? the zero fox ones were getting the general and seeing him wanking it then sex, next was a rivalry which ended up with drinking and then revenge fucking, there is the boat one currently, and the king and neighboring kingdom queen, the after work relaxing with everyone leading to sex one, and the bartender sex mini comic (yes rough, very rough summery of each comic).... which one is emerald copying exactly?

I do really enjoy Zerofox's work, however honestly not enough of zerofox's characters world has been shown for me to really build anything similar. I am of course eager to see what else they have in store for the different characters, but honestly if I could describe the biggest difference between my comic and theirs in one word it would probably be "scope"

Highborn is going to have a very solid plot with clear cut protagonists and antagonist forces.

also also, a note on quality of my work. (sorry for triple posting) but, I've never managed to make a large comic project like this a weekly occurrence and have it stick before until now. I'm purposely starting with an extremely simplistic styling (no shadows/few details) and intending to work my way up slowly page by page until I can find a solid mix of quality and quantity, which would be why the pages seemingly change quality often. (hopefully better!)

it's also a newer world for me, so I'm still getting used to drawing these guys! it's a large part of why I make the references so that I can have something to look back on to reference and make sure I'm drawing them right. a good example being the fact that gharren/legionaire pauldrons went from shoulderpads to big armor plates, it's just me being inconsistent with a newer story and new characters that I've not gotten used to yet.

I like it. A lot of others as well (otherwise we would already drown in hate).

Honest critique - this comic isn't "great" in the matter of art. It is good, it's some fresh breath and it's an interesting story yet. There is much room for improvement on placing characters but your single character ref sheets are already very good - and the cooks are bad dragon dildo shop worthy!

Please keep going! Take the honest critics and try to use them and please phase out the absolute bottom of hate. There will be hate. And not everybody might like it. That's natural. Dragons are nothing everyone likes and some people are only after the ace quality (Rukis for example) comics - their choice. This community is not exactly known for humble kindness :D

yeah, I've shown a few close friends the shading and they like it, but say that it would probably just be too jarring to change up the style so quickly.

so, I'm gonna keep with flatcoloring until chapter two, and just post the shaded version of that page to scraps when I post it friday as a sort of teaser on what to expect.

The stabbed guys are fine. I mean... it's part of the plot. But maybe the beheading stuff and very graphic (and not tooooooo realistic I guess) cut throat - wouldn't mind if this doesn't happen another time. But if it does that's the choice of the artist though. A spoiler and a mildly censored version for the less sturdy readers would be nice. It interferes with the awesome dragon cocks :D

Good thing you had a vote, most artists hardly do that anymore.

When you jump in quality in art styles it creates a distasteful eyesore when wrapping up a chapter or episode for people. So I agree with the people that voted to wait. This gives you more time to discover any missing additional hidden flaws and gain experience on what to improve. On top of that furry comics is sorta like anime, you bring something fresh to the table to moist their appetites for the next season. To bring in good business and publicity to yourself.

For now just ignore the critics and just tease them with tee hees responses.

The point he's making is,the u18 chan community's standards are very high, they're very...very...judgemental.
They're not really the best when it comes to welcoming amateur artist (no offense i hope) and would do anything but encourage them.

I for one like all art and can appreciate that the artists did their best to do what they have done so far and will do iin the future. If I was doing this comic for me, then yeah, that'd be a bit different. but I'm not really just doing this for myself anymore. this comic is more than just art to me, it's a story, one which I've already been getting twitchy about how long it's taking to tell (I have to pace myself making certain pages or else I'd post them as soon as I finish cause I wanna get this comic up and going)

instead, I do think I'm going to try and improve the style of the comic each chapter, and if things really pick up I might start updating more than once a week.

I do like the high details in it but... don't over do it. While the money is nice now and you can deliver it, eventually demand will wear you down. So be sure to stick to something you can enjoy working on at a good pace in production.

Also... not sure what's left of the scalie base but if things go a bit to slow; I would suggest working on mammals as a back up plan.

I'm trying to think what species hasn't been covered that could give you an advantage. Hmm.... *ponders* The only that comes to mind that's a bit low in supplies is:

This has bothered me for a while, but you're getting better at it. There are too many large spaces over curved surfaces that have the same value. The shading has to be more continuous.

The shading goes from full shadow to midtone too quickly. That usually looks fine in something that's strictly cell shaded and cartoony, like Wind Waker (bottom), where one's imagination can imprint the rest of the shading. But in Highborn there's a clear gradient (or feather selection), that's intended to give more depth than it's actually offering.

Take it from someone who's work is nothing but black and white and hasn't done nearly enough with color. I'm a value purist (I vote republican and go to church every day, just kidding hail Satan). So I'll give you the benefit of a point of view coming from a completely different artstyle.

Now I'm gonna use a lot of geometry jargon, so get ready to use Google if you're not familiar with a term. If convincing 3D is what you're going for, for example on a sphere (on the right), or testicles, shading/lighting should go like this:

1) From light source to the opposite side of a nut, there has to be a midtone range covering the circle, but only before you reach the equator where the ball sharply casts a shadow over itself. But it has to be changing continually with respect to a single light source, and not leave spaces at the same value at along any point whatsoever. Actually his balls should be completely covered in his body's shadow, but the sphere example is always helpful.

2) Determine where exactly the light source is with respect to the curve. The highlight. It'll be pretty small, usually smaller, thinner, brighter and more concentrated than how you've been drawing it. And sometimes you look at a lighter character, and omit the highlights as a redundancy. That's a mistake. Gharren's skin should be lit the same way as Ryu's skin, both should have whiter points where color saturation gives way to value at the same rate. And that should happen in every panel that they're under the same light exposure in.

On a flat surface, imagine a light's beams will hit one point on the surface, in such a way that the beam bounces off the surface and goes into the 'camera'. That'll happen to neighboring points almost as directly, causing a small value change over the surface. That causes its light to be more diffuse and spread out.

Over a convex surface, it's more likely for a neighboring pair of normals to be aimed in completely different directions. A normal is a line perpendicular to a curve at a certain point. One beam could be aimed so the angle of incidence and reflection are equal going from the source to the surface to your eye, forming the highlight of the curve. Meanwhile the neighboring point could be aimed just a little bit off so that very sensitive condition isn't true. The more convex the sharper the highlight. Take a look at Darkgem's work (top).

3) To help determine how midtones should change value, consider a tangent plane. The image on the left shows a tangent plane to a curve and its normal, it's a plane that touches a curved surface locally at exactly one point. Or sometimes along a line as it would along the side of a cylinder.

Picture the tangent plane touching the surface at a highlight point or line. The value of the midtone on any point on that curve should change continually, at every single point, based on that point's distance from the tangent plane. Your fuzzy select lasso tool should be wider, you should be using a softer, darker, bigger diameter airbrush. And watch a lot of this guy's tutorials if you haven't, he's really helpful.

4) Don't forget about light reflected off of other objects, even, and especially when they're facing away from the light source. See the sphere on the right.

Hope this helps. It's a lot to read, so it shouldn't be a huge wonder that lighting can be hard. I can have a hard time with it.

You seem to know a bit about light theory. Your explanation is nice and all but in the end you're limiting yourself a lot by clinging to the technical side of it too early. Don't focus on the physical properties that much, instead learn how to make things "feel" right even if you have to bend the rules a little bit.
In the end, how good a pic looks is just gonna be based on your personal experience (How many thousand hours you've spent actually drawing, not studying about it) so don't get too focused on details like that

Also I'd really, really hold off trying to get a patreon going while you have a total of 13 followers. It's gonna take you a few years until you get the FA following required to actually have a successful patreon campaign. Launching a campaign before that point is just asking to never actually get any support there

This is a good idea, thanks for the discourse. The only reason I have a page is to just lie down the groundwork so I don't have to do it later. I'm personally not expecting much for a while, but now I am poised to start cranking out pages for the rest of the year. As for the gratuitous jargon, yeah I'm obsessed with mathy/physicsy stuff. I just hope she isn't put off by Nazi imagery.

She recently just helped out a guy making a comic called Jellybots, who only has 5 pages of his work available online, and his art is really good. Overnight he gained $800/mo worth of support, now already he's past $1200/mo. I only hope I can account for what's different between my situation and Nick Kole's. Maybe furry Nazis aren't going to be as trendy as I hoped. But part of it is I'm hoping to portray the human side of a Wehrmacht conscript who may or may not completely disavow Nazism before the end. America had conscription too.

Oops, I just realized how narcissistic I made this comment look, it's all about me, Scheisse. Well I hope it offers insight for Fenndragon/Emeraldwing anyway.

The journey is simply too long and too hard if you don't have the passion for it. Take it from someone who was drawing for 5 years before reaching 1k watchers

That jelybot guy you're comparing yourself with is a really long way ahead of you, there's no shoutout from a famous artist that's gonna bring you even remotely close to his success

My best advice is to either stop worrying about the money and fame for now and direct all your efforts to becoming a good artist, or giving up altogether. Continuing on the path you're now is only gonna waste your time and make you frustrated when you elaborate plans for success come crashing down

Or you could just ignore me too. I'm not gonna tell you who I am so you'd never know for sure if I'm a professional illustrator that makes a living out of patreon

hey there! thanks for the tips and information~ I'm capable of quite a bit more detail and depth/value in shading, but I've chosen a more stylized approach to fit within my time constraints (and so I don't murder my hands)

a large part of art is how to draw something wrong enough that it looks good. life isn't quite perfect, and the more organic the art, generally the better it looks. if one strives for perfection, the only thing the viewer can see is how and why you failed.

there are parts of this I agree with and disagree with, I do think it's an idea to get a good basis going before launching a patreon (as to actually have a product to sell of some sort~) but like, I don't personally think the best route would be to rely on others to advertise or endorse you, while yes you can rise ranks fast that way, you can also earn people's ire.

you have to first and foremost focus on your own work and do it because you love to. if you keep polishing that stone, eventually it'll shine bright enough to get attention.

that being said, I feel personally that having a gallery or place to post your work so people can see it (like FA, U18, E621) is a really good idea because it's basically passive advertising.

Again, you want to first make sure you have something to sell, then get peoples attention without rustling anybodies jimmies in the process.

I do agree with you about passion and effort involved. Getting your name out there is one thing, but having something to offer is definitely another.

personally, I honestly didn't think I had anything worth much, I don't think very highly of my work, and I'm slow as hell. For the longest time I was really bitter about my art and the idea of getting "good" because I looked at fame and skill synonymously. Now I realize that they are linked, but not one in the same. you can achieve skill without fame, but fame is almost impossible to gain without first having a skill worth said status. (which to be completely honest, I think my "skill" pretty accurately parallels my notoriety. I don't feel like having Ads or people posting about my work would really do much of anything for me because I'm not good enough yet to get peoples attention.

I am however pretty sad to hear you don't want to list your FA because of the conversation here. I love making new art friends, and I'd be really interested in seeing your work! If it was just the idea of publicly, I'd be happy if you sent me a note on FA perhaps?

Oh, not at all, I'm glad we're having this discussion in a less serious place. I have been drawing for years, and I just took some art classes at University in the side to help me improve. In my defense I don't think my plans for success are that elaborate, I'm not expecting much. However this is a story I've been working out for years, almost a decade before I just got semi-serious earlier this year. But I'd be happy eventually making the equivalent of minimum wage because working on this. It's something I love to do.

I won't l launch a campaign until I have a lot more to offer, and what can pass as a following. Acing my perceptual drawing class last semester gave me a little morale boost and made me want to do this more. And I'm looking forward to the next class. School comes first, then work, then the comic. But I don't see myself getting frustrated over not meeting expectations. I'll survive in the meantime.

That is absolutely no well fortified city.
Kudos for the effort of detailing so many individual buildings but the city wall is a huge mistake.
Well unless the other ports of the kingdom are really really shitty defended.

As a reference I suggest you look up some photos of Dubrovnik.
That's how a well fortified and important trade hub looks like.
Notice how they have high walls even on the cliff side of the city and how the fortification on the shore is exactly as strong as the walls on the land sides minus some trenches they surely had of course.

The city on this page is really really easy to sack. You can just land from the river and shores and some decent sappers/engineers could easily build a wooden bridge structure across the wall on the shore or do exactly what Alexander the Great did in the siege of Tyros - build a dam from stones through the water.

Just ignore it for now but if there ever is a fortress/city again just try to look at some real medieval places for reference before and think through what the weak points of the defense are.

But thanks again for the awesome comic! You had some great progress since the beginning. Interesting story as well :)

the wall was built more out of necessity than anything, and there's a gate system underwater in the channel. for the most part the right portion of the city is considered less fortified than the left, which does have a wall on all sides as well as the air hub.

it's not a huge hub, but it's the largest one they have nearby, they only traveled for one day to reach it.

larger cities in this region would be targets considering it's so close to the disputed territory

I'm personally loving this comic although the only critique I would add would be to tone down a bit on the emotion icons added. Sometimes the actions and speech bubbles speak for themselves, there's no need for angry symbols in every instance that involves anger.

While i don't condone such rude comments, i do agree that some tweaks here and there could definitely improve the quality of your art.

I think that maybe you should tone down your shading a bit. You use really dark and pronouced colors when shading, making everything look kinda muddy. You should be a tad more attentive with the eyes too, bad eye anatomy can result in unwanted derpy faces. The same goes for muzzles

Perhaps you should stick with your old style more? Page 13, 14 and 15 looked pretty good! Only the backgrounds had some unflattering colors, other than that everything looked nice.

That being said, HECK YEAH!! I wanted these two to bang for soooo long <3

I use a multiply layer of the color below to shade to avoid a muddy appearance- this page has a bit more contrast due to the extra highlighting involved with lubrication

I do think you are correct about the eyes- I need to be more attentative to them and worry less about the shape of the eye socket/ball and more about the iris

unfortunately, with the muzzles, the only things I see are cartoonish exaggeration used to convey expression and emotion- I'm not really sure how to get things expressive while consistent and anatomically accurate

a few things about the jaw in that panel.

firstly, the face is slightly foreshortened since it's being viewed slightly from below, making the bottom half seem larger (the speech bubble is to blame for that not being apparent)

and actually, I've tried to keep the anatomy of lizards/dragons fairly consistent with nature when it comes to their jaws- if you look here; https://www.beardeddragon.org/useruploads/uploads/83968/83968-1848878553_small.jpg

when a lizards tongue is out and forward, the lower jaw tends to protrude just a bit

It looks like you might be shading with black. I recommend shading with more natural colors such as brown or blue. Looking up 'shading with black' should get you some nice tutorials.

That is Rhaegos. If i remember correctly he is suppose the main body guard of the Earth dragon king. But im not fully sure, emerald can probably confirm who he is when he sees this.
Also we have seen Rhaegos in 2 other small pics so far but he hasn't offically appeared in the comic yet.

I really love the mystical atmosphere of this comic. It reminds me of the comics I used to read in college. It is a great joy to read this comic, and I am not just reading it because of the sexual scenes. I genuinely care about the characters and the story, which is high praise for a furry comic, because I have never before read a yiffy comic for its storyline.

That is what I like about this comic: it is not dependent on the sex scenes. The sex stuff is a natural extension, but not the main center of the story. One could remove all sex references and it would be working just as well. I think that this shows your genuine love for storytelling. You make a story with well-developed characters, and sex is just an afterthought, a detail of the whole work. Most comic creators in the fandom do the exact opposite: they create sex scenes and then build really bad characters and unbelievable worlds around them. This explains why your comic succeeds so well in all areas, where furry comics usually fail so miserably. I also like your way of introducing and developing new characters. It feels much more natural then to just shoving them awkwardly in some scenes, where they would be out of place.

Like many have said before: this is the only comic I am familiar with on U18, which puts story before sex, the only comic which takes actual world-building into account. This makes it amazing and unique.

this is perfect! the "avatar - the last airbender" approach is way better than simply throwing in the emperor out of nowhere! this makes the emperor much more mysterious and mystical. a slow build-up until we get the impressive emperor with an epic introduction is a really cool ideaa! i by the way like that you have characters talk about the emperor, so that we get some small clues. really aweomse!

"A pseudo-noble from the ice kingdom, with a slight disdain for the place. Born to a family of herbalists in the ice kingdom, he spent most of his days in the tutelage of his parents. Day in and day out, his life went on with a tedious repetition of lessons; never once questioning anything outside of his little sanctuary. Until he met his first and only childhood friend, a young earth dragon named Leohart. A new face that brought original stories and more unique discoveries. Not a day went by without the two sneaking off into the kingdom for a small adventure, secret combat lessons, or visits to an area popular with travelers. As time went on and the two grew up, they somehow found each other smitten with one another... something that was entirely unwelcome by all but a small few. Eventually, the two were forced apart as the earth dragon returned home, leaving his home cold, lonely and now..suffocating. A lone earring, left behind as a gift was now the only reminder of their meeting and his only bit of solace. He wanted out and all he had to wait for that chance, was 50 years.

But that was a long time ago, he now makes a living as a traveling martial artist and doctor, specializing in traditional and alchemical treatments.
