I can't speak for that guy, but Bara often gets ridiculous IMO. Mostly because its often mixed with hypermuscle, which...just ugh. Its to some people's taste, but I can't stand it. Two manly characters is just fine and hot, but Bara on the whole doesn't often lend itself towards good proportions which kills it for me.

Though I'm fine with this comic.

i understand. I think the problem is people misunderstand bara.
Bara is not a bodytype, sure is the opposite of stories featuring effeminate men with slim bodies but it doesn't mean you have to make it fat or super muscular, it sill won't count as bara.

Is about personality, the masculinity, kinda like what bears are (or were) in the gay culture. So you'll have bara comics with just fit bodies or no body hair at all and will still count if the characters are very masculine. The problem is that people believe is a superficial aspect (thick eyebrows, bellies, very muscular, etc) but they are wrong, is the character's trait.

This comic here kinda sums up what I find cringeworthy about a lot of furry bara comics.

>>1209622

Though I definitely agree that Bara is typically misunderstood. Most will just imagine it as a stereotypical steamroom full of big muscular guys and the all around superficial stuff you note.

Thanks for the clarification.

As a fan of the body types typically associated with bara, and someone who made and still makes the same error you point out, I have a few questions: to my understanding, bara is born among Japan's gay men as an answer to the bishonen archetype in mainstream Japanese media and yaoi/BL, correct?

Since it's something born in the realm of Japanese culture, could either of you please tell just what specific traits do they associate most with masculinity? Is it something like the warrior type: courageous, strong, tough, imposing and sometimes aggressive? It may seem obvious from looking at things like this, Takaku Nozomu and JIN's stuff, but I'd like to know what nuances I may be missing.

Also a comic such as "Love maintenance" could still qualify as bara just because the characters are gay and also not "feminine", or would it be something else?

As far as I know about the gay culture there, it's very cliquey. Bara guys only go with bara guys, twinks only go with twinks. dominant yaoi guy goes with effeminate yaoi guy. it's rare for them to mix.

They're already gay, but still concerned about their "face".

There's also a issues about the romanticism of relationships, expecting it to be all day happy, or a scene in some yaoi. that their relationship will be perfect. which isn't even how straight relationships work out.

Wat. Aren't these contradictory statements?

I would think so. Bara/twink is a bulk classification where one is straight bulky and the other is plain scrawny. When I think yaoi guys sure they can be big or small, but the bulk levels are pretty much always middling.

Doms and subs exist in the cliques, but it's still the body type that divides them. You won't like find a big guy with a normal guy. It has to be bears with bears, twinks with twinks. average with average.

But somehow being really seme and uke is acceptable to defy the cliques. but you have to be really intense with it.

their rules are honestly pretty arbitrary.

Do you really think that a large and muscular man can't be submissive, and a smaller and thinner man can't be dominant?

Personality(inside and outside the bedroom) has zilch to do with your body type. Funnily enough, I found that a hefty portion of bodybuilders tend to be on the submissive side once the lights and pants go off.

I'm not one for muscular characters, but Amakuchi is an exception as he draws them extremely well without being overly outlandish and unrealistic.

Also, Foxy Rena is a pretty nice series. If you took out all the porn and added some more action, it could be a really good manga series. Hell, I'd go so far to say it could be animated!

From the way you phrased it, it sounded to me like you were saying that dominant guys going only for effeminate guys and bara guys going only for other bara guys are contradictory statements. i.e. that a bara dude can't be effeminate/submissive.

My apologies if I misunderstood you.

>Also a comic such as "Love maintenance" could still qualify as bara just because the characters are gay and also not "feminine", or would it be something else?

now that is where im not so sure as to what can be or not be bara. Because as I said, bara is about masculinity which can also mean anything you don't see in the yaoi (or hardblush) which is effeminate men. I think Love Maintenance can be classified somewhere different, some people will claim is bara because of Tom's body but never have I read it what you said about being gay but not too gay. I mean they don't act too masculine, sensitive could be the right word so if you ask me I only tag it as Kemono/furry since is more general and applies to any type of story as long they have anthro characters in it.

There is a webcomic (gaysome i believe?) where it says that the secret about finding a relationship is dating your own clone, and that seems to be true commonly. Is very common for bears to date bears (with or without quotes), effeminate with effeminate or average with average. There are rare occasions they mix and just like any relationship can last for years or just weeks
