Oh Garr...

I will never understand how you became so popular. You murdered an entire civilization of dragons because your God demanded it and you only questioned it until after the "King of Dragons" said "fuck you" as a child and beat the crap out of you (fought back); then and only then.

May your soul suffer under guilt, shame, and despair for all of eternity.

Your fave is problematic.

In all seriousness though, you're over-simplifying Garland's character arc quite a lot. There's no justification for Garland's actions, though it's implied that the guilt was eating away at him the whole while. Not to go into BOFII spoilers, but things do not really end well for Garland either, so it's not as if karma was blind toward him. His journey is one of penance, since he knows what he had done is wrong.

As for his popularity, he's among one of the few non-human player characters in a jrpg in the 90s, so he's going to attract the fandom.

Its Breath of Fire 3, not BoF2.

Also Garr is in wrong here because before Garr, Guardian Gaist was the first and only Guardian to become subconscious about the whole thing and questioned it. He ran away from it all and was labeled as a Traitor by the others. Garr ONLY questions the order by their God after the "King of Dragons" defeats him as being the only dragon to fight back.

So all that time after Gaist ran away and was aware about Gaist's history, that he continued to murder dragons and children under God's order. So in turn... he was incapable of empathy and even then its still debated with the BoF community if he really did learn anything at the end.

Sorry, meant 3, but accidentally typed 2 lol. Certainly never meant to imply what Garland had done before he met the party *wasn't* wrong, only pointing out that he'd come to understand it and tried to atone for those mistakes.

Been forever since I played the game, though I recall Garland being very moved when the remaining Brood members forgave him. Gaist was the first to turn against Miria, but Garland had bottled up his feelings about his actions for centuries. So much of Garland's arc isn't that he lacks empathy or feelings, but that he tends to bottle up everything inside.

It's up to personal interpretation, but the fact that Garland was intent on making up for his actions against the Brood before he dies, and that he would go against Miria knowing what it meant for him personally, seems to imply that he did learn from his mistakes and would right them at the ultimate personal cost.

There's been plenty of scripts and sci-fi shows that cover this kind of moral thing and you know what most of them do? They live the rest of their lives reflecting on that burden. Even the famous anime "Slayers" covers this during the discovery of the "Dragu Blade".

The mere fact that Garr chose to die rather than live on reflecting his regret, is a cop out. In the lore itself the Guardians were created by their God but they each had their own independent lives as shown in the graveyard that they can choose to sleep forever.

Even if that wasn't an option he could have asked his God for eternal life since he was made of mud and stone in the first place. Not to mention since Myria lost in the end, her faith, and even the will to live; nothing could stop her, not even spite; upon such request to be granted.

Its like a slap in the face to the player on what Garr did.

Narrator: Hey bro, you murder innocent people your whole life and now because you say you feel something you want instant death to no longer reflect on that experience. Sure... *pats Garr on the back* go ahead! Not like that at all cowardice on any level of reflection.

So... no I don't believe Garr learned his lesson.

That's not quite the way I remember it going. I seem to remember it as Garland not choosing to die but knowing it was inevitable, and doing his best to atone/help the party before that happens.

As you said though, it's a debate that's been going on in the Breath Of Fire circles for a long time, so I don't know if we'll reach a satisfying answer here either. I can totally see why you would not care for Garland and his character arc, but also can understand why the character does have fans.

Too bad there was never a sequel of BoF 3 (as fucking hinted at the very end!). Capcom copped out and made an alternate dimension BoF4, which the truth is hidden in the story line until you find Momo revealing this. Which shows that all the characters in BoF III are recognized to be canon to BoF4 saying that they still had journeys passed the ending.

Then we had that disappointing BoF5 game and now a BoF6 mobile game that will never come to the west.

Heh, and what did you think he did for all the centuries he stood awake? The only reason he never entered the Sleep of Stone was because he doubted Myria. She said the Brood would destroy the world yet most of them pretty much let themselves to be killed. They DID had the power, but never used it. Also consider he was created solely to fulfill Myria's orders, so of course he would try to kill the last dragon even with his doubts. True, it's only when Ryu defeats him that he realizes that Myria was in wrong, but he devotes himself to Ryu after that, promising to follow and protect him no matter what, even if he had to fight against the Goddess.

Some can ponder, some prefer to make up for their actions, what matter is the intention of the character.
