Ask Yoshi: Birdo comes out to Yoshi as a male (by Oxnard/Nishi) Furrynomous 2017/07/17 10:14:57 No.1291743

Since it's a sequential set of images, some with dialog, I thought it would go here.

In this story Birdo has male genitals and a female identity... I looked at the guide and thought this would be the best place (Birdo doesn't actually seem to be intersex)

(Note that Catherine/Kyasarin is Birdo's Japanese name - the thread is tagged with that name - Yossy is an alternate spelling of Yoshi used in some Japanese materials)

Normally I'd put it on /cute/ but Oxnard drew Yoshi with his penis exposed.

It was a part of a Tumblr ask blog called "Ask Yoshi" where nishi/oxnard portrayed Yoshi and various other Nintendo characters. There was a period where Birdo (known from the beginning as a male who took a female identity, although that was censored in some western releases) took over the blog and she answered questions. This short comic was posted at the end of Birdo's segment.

The Ask Yoshi pages were recently put on Lulu (I think) as a dojinshi hardcover book.

BTW, yes, Japanese releases of Mario Tennis stated that Yoshi and Birdo date!

This artist never really draws anything strictly pornographic per se, it's just full of casually exposed flaccid dicks that are never really used for anything
Besides all that, why is someone tagging this thread and all the threads related to Star Fox with the Japanese names of the characters (Catherine, Yossy, katakana words, etc)?

1. Nishi/Oxnard has posted a few pornographic things, but usually he just portrays male characters with exposed genitals. He grew up in Orange County, California (near Los Angeles) and, due to his location, was able to, in his childhood, read Japanese kodomo (for young children) comics that few in America could normally access. He must have gotten a liking for exposed male genitals from that.

2. I want to make it easier for Japanese people to find these topics/images. I just tried a Google site search with "Sutafo" (the Japanese short form of "Star Fox") and, thanks to the tags, Google picks up results on u18chan with the tag.

Japanese people may not realize that the characters are known under different names in English (one can easily find that out, but a lot of people are complacent and don't think to look this up) - Also posting Japanese in-text on u18chan gets garbled if it's done inside a text post, but it appears normal if it's posted as a tag.

If you've been on Pixiv before, you'll find that most images are tagged according to Japanese names, not English names. That makes it hard for English-speakers to find images/media unless they know to get the Japanese names and use those as search terms. In light of this aspect, I decided to add Japanese tags to help the Japanese out a little.

I also note that it seems that relatively few Japanese are confident in using English, while the continental Europeans and Latin Americans in the furry community have universally adopted English as a lingua franca (also in most cases, except Pokémon, the names of franchises/characters are usually the same in the various European languages, and in regards to Pokémon the Europeans and Latams know the differences and use English names a lot). Therefore somebody who posts in English can attract European and Latam viewers, but not so many Japanese ones. This is why Piti Yindee (the Wuffle creator) and artdecade had their stuff translated into Japanese (so Japanese furs/kodomers can access the content)

IMO it's still cute; it's just this culture's way of making even genitals taboo so that people grow up to fear their own bodies

That picture only confirms that Birdo is a cross-dresser, not that he is trans.

Here is a possible explanation. Japanese fiction has a long existing trope of cross-dressing male characters that act feminine, but don't fit the profile of legitimate transsexuals. It probably started as an in-joke to the fact that female characters were played by men in kabuki theater; these actors were referred to as "onnagata". Onnagata characters are sometimes referenced in Japanese pop culture for comic relief, and they even appear in children's cartoons and video games. Western fiction doesn't really have something equivalent to the onnagata character, so we often jump to the conclusion that those characters are meant to be transsexual.

More recently in Japan there has been a growing subculture of males called "otokonoko" who like to cross-dress in public, however they aren't transsexual and aren't necessarily gay or transvestites. This could be another explanation for Birdo.

I suppose another hypothesis is that Nintendo thought Americans would not like the idea of hurting a female, so they changed Birdo's biological sex to male. That was what Capcom did with Poison from Final Fight.

But whatever Birdo/Catherine's gender was intended to be originally, Nintendo has apparently retconned Birdo as female in modern games. And furthermore, in the Super Mario universe Birdos are a race, not just a specific character. So an individual Birdo can be whatever gender you imagine it to be.

That may explain why, in the English translation of Rurouni Kenshin, another character (I think Sawagejo Cho) calls Honjo Kamatari a "she" - Kamatari earlier showed off "his" penis to Makimachi Misao, so I'm not sure if he/she's intended as a crossdresser for fun or an actual transgender person?

Also the specifics of Birdo may differ from game to game and from country to country. I can see some games making him/her just a crossdresser and some making him/her transgender male to female.

That picture specifically says he thinks he's a girl, not that he likes dressing as a girl.

he thinks hes a girl, not hes a male and wants to be a girl. Its entirely possible he just literally believes the genders are opposite of what he knows/learned, eg. male = female and female = male. Its also entirely possible that he wants to be trans, who knows. That said can everyone just accept that theres most likely more than one birdo in existence of both male and female variety and honestly stop giving a fuck about the original birdo concept in mario bros 2? Not to mention mario bros 2 was a dream, that birdo doesnt even exist. Theres been no other things from nintendo about actual real birdos from the other games.

Person who brought this point up here:

Ok so from what i know from LGBT studies, being friends with actual trans people and knowing how media works here's what i guess is how this happened.
Because that image was made in the late 80's they probably weren't trying to say Birdo was trans at the time because trans wasn't really a thing the public thought abut at the time. However it totally unintentionally states that Birdo is trans by saying he "thinks he's a girl" which is basically the closest you are going to get in an 80's game to a character being trans that isn't specifically about trans people. I highly doubt nintendo made an actual trans character considering the time period but it's kind of amusing to have birdo be one of the first trans characters in a video game even if that wasn't the intention. Nintendo basically retconned birdo as female (though it way better to take that to mean birdo has fully transitioned) and to be honest she isn't really an important enough of a character that her gender identity matters anyway. It's more one of those things that's fun to point out because it's "technically cannon." I just personally found it funny that someone who made a comic about birdo coming out as a trans male didn't know that random bit of trivia that birdo is technically a trans female. It was just me havin a chuckle at an odd headcannon.
