I have to say, it bugs me how this story portrays bats as Public Enemy No. 1, when the overwhelming majority of bat species are insectivores who would never eat meat or blood. Meanwhile, the marketplace has plenty of omnivores walking around, and there are even a few carnivores. A quick Google search will tell you that raccoons, moles, armadillos, and yes, even squirrels are omnivores. There are even some badgers and weasels, which are carnivores. Also, some species of mice and rats are opportunistic omnivores are some are carnivores. So why do bats take the brunt of all this discrimination? Why does Monti have to hide when plenty of other meat eating animals can walk around in broad daylight? I can still suspend my disbelief and just accept that these are world building rules, but it bothers me.
