This is his standard coloring process iirc. BGs get done/blocked in first, then characters.
IIRC, a lot of artists usually do it in that order so that they can block in their shading and any highlights more properly, as it allows a steady light source to work with. It's pretty standard as far as art stuff goes.

Anyways, I saw the reveal of Andybits coming a mile away given what Zaush said in patreon comments a while back and also his constant hiding of them until now, it doesn't really change anything to me in the long run. I still find the ott kinda cute.

I dont think a person that draws so beautifully would work on a comic only for money, exclusively. But its hard to continue dedicating so much effort to such a hard level of publishing when there isnt enough money coming from it. Art is hard, you need to focus on whats working.

That of course is what I think, and I can be totally wrong since I dont know the artist personally. What I can say for sure that is true is that you're trying to blame an entire group of people that are known for naturally dropping free shit online.
