i tried reading everything again to see if i could make more sense of this, but there really aren't (m)any clues...
i think my best explanation is that rio is an incubus, and his nature both makes him insatiable but also draws other guys to him. Normally, this just becomes transactional (so that's why he was able to become the university slut), and I think that also probably explains some of marsh's behavior -- he was caught under rio's spell (hence why rio says it's his fault on page 9.)
The surprise for rio is that marsh believes it's more. That's what Rio hasn't experienced before. Rio still probably can't believe it, and probably also doubts Marsh's ability to accept him for what he really is, which I think is why he continues to push back in the later pages.
the part I'm split on is if Marsh has always been some kind of demon or if he only became that way through interacting with Rio.
It's clear that Rio isn't necessarily surprised about the existence of demons (which makes sense because he is one)...just surprised that *Marsh* would be one.
On the one hand, if Marsh is a demon (but just a different kind), that kinda explains how he has so far been so...sexless...even though being basically ideal boyfriend material.
On the bottom of page 18, where there's the text boxes in the background, there's something from Rio where he says he's uncomfortable saying "I love you" because "in his family they don't really say it." To me, that makes sense if Rio is from a family of incubi, because for them, it's all just part of the job.
...but then Marsh talks about his family, so not sure if that's realistic for a different kind of demon family.
(one other possibility is that elbow guy is also an incubus who doesn't "approve" of how close rio is getting to one of the "victims" as it were.)
Whatever the case is, now that Marsh has also been revealed to be a demon, this means that Rio no longer has to fear that Marsh will reject him for being one as well. so they will be able to live together happily ever after.
