I think he really liked the image of cupping the wolf's head, but didn't create the correct posturing to facilitate proper proportions. He would of needed to be hunched over, and would probably create a primal sort of look, like a caveman getting a good head fuck in. But I think the artist wanted something more tender and maybe awkward? So ultimately it comes down to choosing the right pose for the story, and what ideas of sexuality you are trying to portray.
