To be fair, everything only happened in his dream. The whole thing from the start wasn't real, the boyfriend died right after the confession, they never went on an actual date.

Technically there's no "real" character development for the boyfriend except in the few panels in the confessions. Everything was in the protagonist's mind, we don't even know how the boyfriend would treat him.

It's just a made up dream about his made up date with his late boyfriend because he just can't do that in real life, so he only have that dream to either live on, or give up.
