This comic's preview issue #0 came out just as I was getting into furry. It's one of those stories I remember fondly because it was both there at the start for me, and it was well written.

It's both sad and comforting to see it reach closure, but I'm happy the artists did bring it to closure. So many stories just get dropped halfway through.

To me it felt like an extended "very special episode" of a 90's sitcom that was also shoddily drawn. It improved over time, but I could never get into it.

That's because it started publishing in 1999 and it *was* a "very special" comic book series. A story about gay people who were non-stereotypical (compared to other gay people in scripted entertainment), living (then) ordinary suburban lives while not in the closet and daringly doing yardwork-while-gay without a single dong gracing its pages, at a time when most of its readers were still likely closeted men in the Western World who could only *dream* of living a life as fulfilling as any one of the men of 6 Kinsey Circle. It was a radical, fresh new storytelling concept...that was wholly, rigidly dependent on the readership of its times. *Of course* the formula has aged poorly, and in some ways it *was* never that good. But a gay comic you could possibly show your parents in 1999 was largely unheard of, especially before most of the ways furry itself gained *more* social stigma over the years. This new issue doesn't seem meant for young new readers. They'll need insulin after reading it. It's meant for older readers who read and liked the original. They may *still* need insulin after reading it, but at least most of the characters are familiar faces with long-established backstories in the reader's mind.

>a story about gay people leading normal lives and being normal people
>the symbolism number is 6 and it shows up like three times, one for the Kinsey scale, one for the address, and I think one for the number of main characters
It's funny how it almost feels like they were trying to shoot themselves in the foot with that

It's slightly odd to see the characters that hasn't aged much for past 15...20 years (except maybe John). Even Jason, who was the youngest one in the original cast, should be in his mid-30s by now.

It's like a mini gay village in the suburbs. The whole reason gay villages existed was to find a sense of close community where other neighbors might have otherwise been hostile to them (and a few of 6 Kinsey Circle's neighbors *were* hostile). And this story was a fantasy of an ordinary life for out-of-proud guys, and fantasies don't *completely* leave their comfort zones (in this case I suspect it was out-and-proud). Gay villages have relatively less importance today as there's greater mainstream acceptance, but people write what they know from when they knew it. AFAIK even the writer and artist themselves were also from Boston. And there are generational considerations: The original Circles characters were mostly Baby Boomers (Paulie, John, Arthur) and Generation X (Doug, Ken, Taye), and one Xennial (Marty). Now consider the kinds of gay lives people *their age* could've hoped for, when they were young, when they were young adults, when they were middle-aged, etc. For lots of guys, in the eyes of their families and neighbors, there was really very *little* halfway between completely closeted and assumed to be straight on one hand, and out-and-proud and assumed to be sleeping around on the other hand, because even many people with fairly positive attitudes towards gay men could still have some very stereotypical ideas about them. Circles took those out-and-proud men, referenced the stereotypes of the time, and tried to *subvert* them with in-your-face ordinariness.

This was a very thoughtful reply, I acknowledge it highly, but I was just trying to make a joke about how this is a pro gay story at the same time a reader could make a 666 joke about the characters

You have just unlocked an old memory of comic launching trailers on RabbitValley website and artist's Furnation.com page.

There were short Macromedia Flash videos, one of them was "The Blair Witch" parody with Taye recording famous video on Marty's webcam and another one had something ending up with 666.

>It's like a mini gay village in the suburbs. The whole reason gay villages existed was to find a sense of close community

Except they didn't really exist at the time. You had certain "households" such as the "Prancing Skiltaire" that were attempts at housing gay communities within the furry fandom, but that's about as far it went.

Circles was repeating the common furry trope where you had an inexplicably and openly gay community within a society which was otherwise hostile to such things, but only for the point of generating drama at suitable points. Otherwise it was just wish fulfillment fantasy written for the 40-yo instead of the horny 20-something.

First, that wasn't a "common trope" in the 90's. The only one that really applies to, and arguably made popular, was Associated Student Bodies with its "oops! all gays" dorm, to the point where even the one "straight" character ended up fulfilling a gay crush's fantasy.

Paulie very clearly built a gay safe haven. It's not a coincidence there are so many queer residents, and it's definitely not inexplicable.

Yes, this is what I meant. 6 Kinsey Circle is a gay safe haven. Gay villages also attempt to be this to some degree, and I thought that was implied. And yes, Circles is still a fantasy, but a wholesome one of a place to belong in the real world. It was wishing for the benefits of a better future in the contemporary present in a relatively realistic manner. The furry element isn't a setting, but a storytelling "lens," as all the characters are all still human, their furry characteristics are never directly mentioned in-comic, and Ken is actually African American. It's actually deliberately made possible to completely reillustrate the Circles *comics* with the text intact, but with human-looking characters. I can't remember if furry characteristics were referenced as a descriptive device in the issues 9-to-13 book, though, or if that was provided through character illustrations.

Would it be bad to say I'd watch an animated mini-series or so adapting the comics? You'd have to get just about everything right though.

More possible though streaming, but considering the disaster of the Q-force teaser trailer (the show was alright but the inital trailers did some pretty good damage), and the dumpster fire their animation department is going through...maybe an indie animated show would probably work.
