I really miss when this artist used to draw the "dad" type as younger. He has a bunch of art tucked away somewhere of these two from maybe the last decade, and they started off as (likely) around the same age.

I seem to recall the artist saying at one point that they were based on existing characters, so maybe aging one of them up was an attempt to distance this from the source material? I'm not sure exactly what that source was though.
