I don't know why anyone is patting themselves on the back. This was the only direction that plot line was going to go.
I like this comic. It's cute. But it doesn't have the emotional maturity or gravity to really pull off a morally compromised, potentially dangerous Indy. As soon as some sketchy, undeveloped character showed up for a few pages to tell Pen that the scrungly man of his dreams might not be a great person, it was only ever going to end with his own dismantling. We never got to *know* Alan, but we are treated to a multi-page (apologetic) filibuster about how he's probably the worst boyfriend ever. By the time the violence comes into the picture, you're going to have people thinking he deserved worse.
This is also why i don't think the "dangerous carnivore on the loose" subplot dangling in the background is going to amount to anything worthwhile. Thankfully, that's mostly stayed a background detail.
