If you're using Blender pick up hair tool or learn the current particle system for hair if this is for prerendered use only. If you're using Maya learn xgen, to my knowledge it can make prerendered particle hair and place cards based on that.
Hair cards/hair rendering seem(s) intimidating but I promise you while the learning curve is steep it's a skill that once you do it once you'll have it down pat. Sculpt looks great but improving fur rendering would take this into a new level.
