Exactly as you said, there is a clear line between anime and hentai (I'd say it gets pretty murky sometimes, and there are still many people that think anime = loli tentacle hentai, but whatever), but anthro and yiff aren't as distinct, porn and fetishes of all kinds are so impregnated into the furry community that most people inside the fandom don't expect it to be any other way, so we can't expect people outside to think differently.
Also you have to remember that unlike anime, the furry community was born with sex, fetishes and perversion inside, and it's why people join and stick around, despite everyone saying "i just like the art uwu". If we take away the porn and all the horny teenagers, what's left to enjoy? A couple of comics and some random OCs?
We may get mainstream furry media in the future, but not if we keep giving people outside the community reasons to hate and associate furries and sex.

The fact that we're discussing this on a furry porn board in a thread about a muscular anthro lizard kinda says it all

Nonsense, there's plenty of porn throughout all of fiction. It's not called "rule 34 but only for furries." Furries may be more openly sexual but that classic hypocritical view (gotta see porn but can't tell ANYONE) has been infiltrating the community via people bashing zoo/cub etc. as though drawn characters are depictions of real acts. Drawn characters are automatically consenting by virtue of the artist giving consent by doing the drawing. Why the fuck does anyone care if drawn animals are consenting? Why the fuck does anyone care if anything FICTIONAL is consenting? It's simple. They want to feel powerful; controlling other people's lives by telling them what they can and can't enjoy.

In short, mainstream furry is already a thing, so you can fuck right off. Literally. Masotan says hi. So shut the fuck up with the authoritarian politics 'cuz it's a real boner killer. Thanks.
