Feretta does this, a lot of the one-off non-canon strips take place in different settings from the actual comic. Usually a "modern-day" setting, for whatever reason.

I assume it's just a bit of fun "what if" plus a clever trick to make it more obvious that the pieces are, in fact, non-canon.

Here's a fun possibility though: Since the fox girl doesn't exist in the comic (afaik) and in almost every canon ever, dragons are known for living a long fucking time, it could very well be that this image series actually does take place in the main setting but it's just some hundreds of years later.

Feretta actually explained this as the more modern setting being the "real world". Fen, Vix and the others are actors so the stories we see with them are their performances.

So my stupid theory where to point the finger at for the start of this trend. Grand connected universes are something authors have done for a *very* long time, but I kinda blame the MCU for making it a borderline requirement in modern pop culture.

In the current zeitgeist, it's cooler to make everything canon than not.

It's funny though because it's actually sort of limiting as a writing tool; sometimes the excuses you have to make in order for things to be "in the same universe" have to be rather contrived, and I think this is a fine example of that lol. Except by saying the world isn't real, it's sort of being done backwards. Instead of "everything is canon," we're saying "nothing is canon." Both ideas are more or less equivalent in purpose, though. And it's still a minor type of shared universe in the sense that the characters have the same physical existence -- that part doesn't change whether they're in front of a green screen or not. So that's my own rather contrived connection to justify my point.

Still love Feretta's work, but knowing this retcon exists, even though it's a pretty ignorable and inconsequential one, honestly is a little irritating. The idea that the actual main story/canon is not "the real world" feels a bit off. Like everything has less weight and consequence now I guess.

But I guess it's still very clever. If they're actors, that also explains away why they act slightly different in the one-off stuff. They're being themselves instead of being characters. Even though they already are characters. Very meta, but yeah.

Also: I guess I should've realized all this was a thing back when we had that whole sequence of Vix taking the role of narrator and explaining the world building directly to the viewers, but my brain totally glossed over that and assumed it wasn't meant to be taken as literal. But it actually was. I'm an idiot.
